LED retrofit: how Egyptian factories and warehouses cut lighting bills by half
Every business in Egypt has felt electricity prices climb over the last few years. For a factory, warehouse, showroom or parking garage, lighting is often one of the biggest lines on that bill because the lights run 12 to 24 hours a day. The good news: it is also the easiest line to cut.
The problem with old lighting
Metal halide high bays and fluorescent tubes waste most of their energy as heat, take minutes to warm up, lose brightness every month and need frequent lamp and ballast changes. In a hot Egyptian summer that extra heat also makes your air conditioning work harder.
What LED changes
A modern LED high bay typically uses 50 to 70 percent less power than the metal halide fitting it replaces for the same light on the floor. It switches on instantly, keeps its brightness for years, and is rated for 50,000 hours or more, so maintenance visits almost disappear. Less heat also means a lighter load on your cooling.
A simple payback example
Take a 2,000 m2 warehouse with 40 old 400 W fittings running 16 hours a day. Replacing them with 150 W LED high bays saves around 160 kWh every day, which adds up to tens of thousands of pounds a year at commercial tariffs. Most retrofits like this pay back in one to two years, and then keep saving for many more.
Choosing the right LED fitting
Match lumen output to mounting height, pick 4000 K to 5000 K neutral white for clear labels, insist on IP65 for dusty sites and drivers rated for high ambient temperatures. Add motion sensors in aisles and daylight sensors near skylights to save even more.
Beyond the warehouse
The same logic works for LED street lights, flood lights for yards and facades, LED panels for offices and schools, and solar LED lights for remote sites. Hotels, hospitals, malls and government buildings can all apply it.
How Palm helps
